Senior Class Term 4 2011ISP_.png

This term in literacy we are reading the Australian My Story "New Gold Mountain: the diary of Shu Cheong" by Christopher W. Cheng. In HSIE we are studying the Gold Rush and Eureka Stockade.

"New Gold Mountain" is set at Lambing Flat, near Young, NSW and the Eureka Stockade occurred near Ballarat in Victoria. However there was also a gold rush not far from here at Uralla at Rocky River. Many workers including the Chinese came to Rocky River in 1856 and the population went from about 100 people to 5000 people within a year. Today the town of Rocky River has about 100 people.

We will be having an excursion to Uralla and visiting Rocky River and McCrossin's Mill Museum in Week 2. The museum has a great display on the Chinese miners during the Gold Rush at Rocky River and we will be trying our hand at some gold-panning.
